CoffeeShop Digital Designs: Graph Paper!

I wanted some digital scrapbooking graph paper to use in a design I was working on, so I decided to create a pack to post up here.  These are 1000x1250px .jpgs, and perfect for making cards, notes, blog backgrounds, etc.  I really enjoy making digital paper, so I am sure I will put together a few more packs.  These papers can be used in personal or commercial projects, no credit necessary.

Download the free CoffeeShop Graph Paper here.

CoffeeShop Velvet Ash B&W Action UnWrapped

NOTE:  You can now download the free CoffeeShop Velvet Ash B&W action.  I wanted to post my newest tutorial for the CoffeeShop Velvet Ash B&W action. I love this effect and it is so easy to achieve on your own.  Today I am posting the tutorial and I will do a follow-up post with the free action in a day or two.  Just in case you are interested, this name was inspired by the many volcano books I have recently read to my boys.

CoffeeShop Boost Action and Action UnWrapped Tutorial

I use a nifty trick to quickly select the highlights of an image so I can put them on a separate layer and then use different blending modes to get amazing effects. This tutorial can only be used in Photoshop, but Photoshop Elements users, don't fret! I wrote an action that does the exact same steps that runs perfectly in PSE. You can download it below at Step 3.

CoffeeShop Boost Instructions (PSE users start reading at Step 3.):

1. Steps 1-2 only work in Photoshop, so PSE users can skip down to Step 3 and download the action.  Open your image. Click on the Channels tab next to your Layers tab.  Go to the bottom of the pane and click on the first little button on the left that looks like a dotted circle.  This loads the highlights of your image as a selection.

2.  Click back on Layers and your highlights are all selected.   Once you see the selection, simply Ctrl-J to put the highlights on their own layer and play with the blending modes.  You can then Shift-Ctrl-I (Select, Inverse) and select the shadows if you want, but I use the highlights selection 99% of the time.

3.  Now the fun part!  If you have Photoshop and want to save some time or have Photoshop Elements, you can download the CoffeeShop Boost Action that automatically selects the highlight and puts them in a new layer in screen blending mode.  Download the CoffeeShop Boost action here.

4.  Here is my original image.

5.  I ran the CoffeeShop Boost action.  Highlights are selected and put on a new layer in screen mode.  This brightens the image.  Adjust the opacity or paint on the layer mask (not seen in this image, but included in the action) if needed.

6.  Try other blending modes because you never know which one might look the best. Here is multiply.

This is soft light.

Here is overlay blending mode.  Both soft light and overlay give a really nice contrast boost.

Try other blending modes for fun, you might be surprise at the results.  You can also Ctrl-J the Boost layer to make a copy if you want more dramatic enhancements.

One of the reasons I wrote this tutorial and action was to prepare you for the release of my newest free action and tutorial that uses this Boost method.  You can see the after image below.  This fun new B&W action and tutorial is coming out this week.  :-)

How to make Tileable Wallpaper Tutorial!

We had a wonderful Easter party yesterday. The kids had their Easter egg hunt and the adults were able to relax under the shade trees and eat, drink and be merry. I hope you and your friends and family also had a wonderful holiday weekend.

I had a few minutes to check out some of my favorite blogs this morning when I came across this great video tutorial on making tileable wallpaper in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements on Pugly Pixel (not a sponsor of this blog, just a great website I enjoy visiting). I have read/seen many tutorials, but this is the first one that actually made sense to me and I wanted to share this link with you.

This is a great method to make web/blog backgrounds and custom digital paper and I hope you have as much fun playing with it as I have! Thank you Katrina for posting such great tutorials.  ♥ I love learning new things.

Happy Easter!

I wanted to wish you and your family/friends a Happy Easter!  We are having a party in our backyard, so I am off to set up the picnic tables and chairs.  It has been a  stressful few weeks and we are looking forward to spending time with our loved ones (and eating Texas BBQ)!!!

CoffeeShop Desktop Background 2!

I am still addicted to making Desktop Backgrounds (here is my first set of CoffeeShop Desktop Backgrounds), and I wanted to share this new version. You can change the text on the labels and the background color. There are three photoframes with clipping masks (you can use my fun Group-It action to quickly load your images).   I used some design elements from Sassy Designs (brad, staples, labels).

I will be posting a tutorial on how to make these in the near future.  So many of my readers have posted their own desktop background creations on my Facebook page.  It is so fun seeing what you guys come up with, and how much better they are than mine!

Download the free CoffeeShop Desktop Background 2 here.

CoffeeShop Action Flashback: Attic Vintage

Over the years I have been blogging here on CoffeeShop, I have created a large number of actions and tutorials.  My new readers might not have had time to go back deep in the vault and dust off some of my older actions, so I have decided to post a new before/after sample done with old actions/tutorials.

Today I wanted to highlight the CoffeeShop Attic Vintage tutorial and action.  I posted

CoffeeShop Sweet 16 Storyboard!

I had fun putting together my newest storyboard, CoffeeShop Sweet 16.  This is a 12x12 inch layered .psd storyboard (open in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements) which can be printed or displayed on your blog.  There are 16 clipping masks, and I would suggest downloading my super fast and easy Group It action to make loading this storyboard a cinch.  This is not an action!

CoffeeShop Desktop Backgrounds 1!

Like most people out there, my computer desktop is a complete mess and I can't find anything. I saw this idea of making a desktop background for organization at Pugly Pixel (thank you so much Shaina for posting the link in the comments, I couldn't for the life of me remember where I read that post), and was so excited to create my own version of desktop backgrounds.    Oh, check out her paper-making tutorial at Pugly Pixel too, I used this to make notebook and graph paper.  What a great site!

My husband usually glances at my creations on my computer and blog and doesn't say much.  But he did a double-take on my new desktop background and asked me to make some for his work computers with his logo/business name!  I hadn't even thought how great these would be for business computers.

Here is the version on my computer today.  I love the idea of the big trash area.  I often make files that I need to send off but want to remember to delete after they get there safely.  Now I can drag them in the trash area and know I need to delete them later.

Here is another version with photo frames included in the set:

These backgrounds are a pretty standard size of 1920 x 1080, but they will not fit all monitors. You can try resizing them or cropping them to fit.  Once you edit them, flatten and save them as a jpg.  If you have Windows 7, go to your desktop and right click, select Personalize, and then click on  the background tab on the bottom and load the background like any other image.  If you can't put your icons wherever you want, right click on your desktop and then select View, then uncheck "Align icons to grid".

Both of these backgrounds are customizable. You can change the colors of the background (I used papers from Sassy Designs), and the colors/text on the labels.  The version with the photo frames have clipping masks so you can easily add your images.  You can use my funl Group-It action to quickly load your images. And check out all of my other scrapbooking/digital design freebies.

Click on the color swatch by Background Color to change the background color.   It is in multiply blending mode, and you can change modes or adjust the opacity for custom colors.  The Color fill 2 layer changes the color of the labels.  And you can adjust the text layers to taste.  The photo frame version has 4 clipping masks you can use to add your images.

I wish I could claim to be the inventor of this clever idea, but at least I can help you organize your desktop!  I really enjoy  making these so I am sure I will be posting more background freebies.  Check out all of the desktop backgrounds my Facebook fans have made at the CoffeeShop FaceBook page!  Make sure you "like" my page if you visit.  I am there all of the time answering questions, asking advice on new freebies, and finding out what you guys want.  Make a comment below if you want me to write a tutorial on making your own custom desktop background.  :-)

Have a great weekend!  Here is the preview of my next CoffeeShop Desktop Background I will be posting in a few days:

CoffeeShop AutoH2 ColorBlock Web Action

I have been asked to make a version of the AutoH (horizontal) and AutoV (vertical) ColorBlock web actions that don't round the corners (esp. for posting images on Facebook), so here is the AutoH2 version! This action is for your horizontal images, and it does everything the the AutoH action does (crop, resize, add custom colorblock and text, sharpen), except no rounding of the corners.  I will make the vertical version next.

CoffeeShop Frames 7!

I wanted to thank you so much for your prayers and kind comments on my last post.  Today my husband woke up with a smile on his face, quoting Andy Dufresne in Shawshank Redemption: "Get busy living, or get busy dying".   Great quote and I can't tell you how excited I am to see a real smile on his face; it has been a while.  I guess we are going to start living our new normal life.   Things are going to be fine.  ♥♥♥♥

I have wanted to figure out how to design a fake software box, and I used this tutorial today.  My version is far from perfect (a bit warped!), but it was fun to try to create a CoffeeShop box.  I even used some textures from FlyPaper Textures to decorate my box.  It felt great to play on the computer again.

So today I am posting download links to my newest free CoffeeShop Frames.  You can find my other ones here.   I made 5 frames using Sassy Design papers and my own CoffeeShop border.  It is a diverse selection, so hopefully you will find one you love.  These are layered .psd files that need to be opened in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.  Simply use the clipping mask to add your image.  If you don't know how to use clipping masks, you are really  missing out and should read my clipping mask tutorial or download my fun Group-It Action.  If you don't want to use the clipping masks, just add your image on the top layer and free transform it to fit (Ctrl-T).

If you want to post these frames on a background that is not white, delete the background layer (it is white) and save as a .png.  Otherwise, flatten and save as a jpg.  They frames are 1000px wide, so they can be adjusted to fit any website.    I hope you have fun playing with these frames!

And like everything you download from this blog, these frames can be used personally or commercially, no credit necessary; just your firstborn child.  On second thought, keep your firstborn child.   I have enough on my hands with my boys, dog, cats, and chickens.  ;-)

Download the CoffeeShop Frames 7 set at  Mediafire.  These are image files, not actions, so please don't try to load them into your action pane.  Just open them like any other image.

CoffeeShop Tutorial: Flower Art, Part 2 - Editing with Textures

This is the second part of my tutorial on making your own flower art.  You can read Part 1 where I discuss how to set up your own free studio using things you already have around the house and tips on photographing your flowers in this earlier post.  Today I am going to show you one way I edit my photos using textures and Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

I have a bit of a texture addiction.   There are some amazing textures out there for purchase (and worth every penny); you can find beautiful textures at Pretty Presets and FlyPaper.  My favorite place to download free textures are ShadowHouse Creations. Jerry has beautiful textures and if you end up downloading and using them, consider leaving a donation. I think he has the biggest collection of free textures that can be used personally and commercially out there.

So, on to the tutorial.   You can download the original image here if you want to edit with me.  You should have a working knowledge of layer masks and using textures.

Here is the before image.
I have quite a few layers after I finish editing. I am going to walk you through each layer, starting from the bottom.

1.  I ran the CoffeeShop 2020 action to add some contrast and "pop".  I used a black brush on the layer mask to remove the effect from the flowers and vase because my whites were getting blown-out.

2.  I was not happy with the obvious lines on my fabric (shirt) background so I decided to soften them some.  I made a copy of the Background and moved it on top of my layers, gaussian blurred it, and then added a layer mask filled with black to hide the effect.  I used a soft white brush to paint over the fabric background to add back in the blur and then I adjusted the layer opacity until there was only a subtle pattern. I did a quick and dirty edit since I am covering the image with textures which will hide my imperfections.

3.  I added my first texture, Blutopia from ShadowHouse Creations.  I put the layer in Overlay blending mode (you can also try soft light, vivid light, multiply, screen, etc. and adjust the opacity to taste) at 100%.  I also added a layer mask and painted out the white flowers with a soft black brush.

4.  I wanted a warmer image, so I added a color fill adjustment layer (hex#baaa96), grouped it to the texture, and put that layer in Color blending mode, 100%.  This is a fun way to change the color of textures on your image on the fly.

5. I wanted to burn (darken) parts of the image to add a vignette, so I added a new layer, filled it with 50% gray, put it in Overlay blending mode, and painted directly on my image with a low opacity soft black brush.  If you want to dodge (lighten) parts of your image, use a soft low opacity white brush.  This is a non-destructive way to burn/dodge on your image. If you mess up, simple fill the layer with 50% gray and start over.  I just noticed my gray layer looks like a spooky face!

6.  I added one more texture, Erosion of the Afterlife from ShadowHouse Creations, and put that layer in Soft Light blending mode, 100%.

7. I wanted to play with the color of that texture also, so I added a color adjustment layer (hex#2a221c), grouped it with that texture, and put that layer in Color blending mode.

8.  I wanted to add a subtle yellow vintage effect, so I added a navy blue color fill adjustment layer (hex#0c169c) and put that in Exclusion blending mode, 20% opacity.

9.  I thought the white flowers were too bright, so I added a levels adjustment layer and adjusted the sliders under the curve until they were not so bright.  I then filled the layer mask with black and used a soft low opacity white brush and painted on the flowers to add the effect.

There are so many ways to make your own art, and I hope this motivates you to go and play.  Editing is so fun!
