Dominoes and Books to Excite a 1st Grade Boy

>> Sunday, October 30, 2011

I am a big fan of boredom.  Not my own, but for my boys.  They come to me whining that they are bored, I offer to entertain them with some cleaning projects, and they disappear into their playroom and magically find something to do.

I walked in on them a few days ago and Duke was trying to teach Imp how to play All Fives dominoes. Duke loves math and he loves playing this game.   But

I Finally Made Tasty Biscuits!!!

>> Friday, October 28, 2011

I have been on a quest to make delicious biscuits.  Honestly, I feel guilty serving my kids those canned ones, especially since I love to bake.

However, until today I have not been successful.  I don't like using shortening and that really limits the recipes out there.  Every recipe I have tried has resulted in hard, short hockey pucks.  But today I finally found a winner.  These Southern Buttermilk Biscuits are delicious and are made of butter instead of shortening!

I didn't have buttermilk on hand so I added 1 tbsp of white vinegar to a cup of milk and let it sit for five minutes.  I also found the biscuits a bit too salty, so next time I will lower the salt by 50% or so.  But these biscuits turned out fluffy, buttery and soft.  In other words, heavenly.  And I was able to use my food processor.

You can see my little L Tremain Butter Bell behind the biscuits. My mom gave this to me on my birthday and I absolutely love it. We have been trying to eat more "natural" dairy like whole milk and butter, but I hate spreading hard cold butter on my pancakes. So I just add a stick of butter to my butter ball and I can keep it at room temperature for a week or so. I just change out the water every 2 or 3 days. So far the butter has stayed fresh, even through this hot Texas summer.

Fresh biscuits and real butter.  Hungry yet?

Here is my newest storyboard/frame, the CoffeeShop  Damask Storyboard 5!  I loved this damask pattern I found over at Pixels & IceCream and thought it would look perfect in a simple storyboard.  This storyboard is 5x7 inches and can be used for print or on your website or blog.

You can also change the colors (click on Background, Damask, or Border Color) or move the middle CutOut around (select the top three layers together and then Ctrl-T and move them wherever you want).

Pretty Presets Free Presets!!!

>> Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Thank you so much for all of the naming ideas for my new action in the last post.  I will have the action up in a day or two.

I was so excited when Laura from Pretty Presets sent this post with a freebie link my way this morning.  Laura is one of my amazing sponsors that allow me to continue to blog and post freebies here on CoffeeShop, so please go visit her website when you have a chance.  Not only is she incredibly talented, but she is also a wonderful and generous person.

Now on to Laura!!!!

I love the thought of "Make A Difference Tuesday" and am hoping these 5 simple presets will make a difference in your editing today. I get so many questions about sharpening pictures outside of Photoshop, so I thought I would create some easy sharpening presets for you to use. They each will vary a little in the amount of sharpening that will be applied to your photo. I realize each photo is unique and some many need more (or less) then others. I hope you enjoy! You can also find an article about sharpening your pictures through lightroom here.

On this picture I used the preset "Soft Skin 5" from the Soft Skin Collection and then "Sharpen 2" from the free presets you are about to download. Very easy edit and done in seconds!

Help Name This Action!

>> Monday, October 17, 2011

I just wrote a new tinted B&W action and I am ready to release the action and also an action unwrapped tutorial where I take apart the action so you can do a similar edit without the action. However, I am having problems naming it. Please hover over the image below to see the after (no changes made after the action ran) and if you have a name inspiration, please post a comment!

I already have three tinted B&W actions that have a similar (yet different enough to write a new one) effect, ButterCream, Mocha Velvet, and Toasted Coconut, so maybe something along that line? I think this is my favorite tinted B&W action yet!!! I love how there are so many ways to make a creamy tinted B&W edit.

Coffee Chicks

>> Thursday, October 13, 2011

Am I the only mom out there who has kids who build lego outside coffee cafes for their chicks (no kidding, I just photographed this one) or wine bars out of wooden blocks?

I was drinking 3-4 cups of coffee a day and completely happy (if a bit jumpy at times), when my sister and mother introduced me to Teeccino Herbal Coffee (the price on the link is for 3 bags). At first I almost gagged (seriously). Who in the world would drink herbal coffee???  Isn't the point of coffee the caffeine?  I have two boys for goodness sakes!!!

My Mom, who has reflux, can't drink coffee anymore and had an extra bag of hazelnut Teeccino. So I decided to give it a try. After all, I do get tired of waking up like a zombie until I have my coffee each morning.

Well, I have to say that I love it!  I don't think it is as delicious as real coffee (when brewed straight), but I mix it with 25-50% real coffee in the morning (this is actually better than real coffee, nice and smooth) and have it straight at night for a nice treat.  Now I can drink "coffee" whenever I want.  I use a coffee press when I drink straight Teeccino since I don't have to worry about using a filter (unfiltered real coffee can raise your cholesterol).

And Teeccino might have saved my life. I had to give up coffee completely when I was sick earlier this week, and if I had been drinking my normal 3-4 cups a day I might have gone into complete loss-of-caffeine-shock and died.  I might not be kidding.

I am not giving up real coffee, but it is nice that I have an alternate for afternoons and evenings AND also cut my morning caffeine.  Now I have to write some herbal coffee actions.  ;-)

The Sickness From Hades!

>> Tuesday, October 11, 2011

I just wanted to post a quick note to let you know why I have been gone for so long.

Last week Duke caught a little bug that involved a quick food exit from both ends.  It only lasted 24 hours and he didn't seem as upset about it as his mother who had to clean up after a few accidents.

A few days later Imp had the same symptoms, quick and dirty.  Feeling great myself, I thought the adults in the family were safe from this apparent childhood disease.

Well, unfortunately once again I was proved wrong.  My husband and I came down the the disease a few days later, and it was not some minor 24 hour bug.  It was a major life-disrupting virus that kept us down for a few days.  I won't go into any details other than the fact I spent too much time visiting my little white toilet friend...  At one point I called my mom, sobbing, and begged her to take the boys for a day.   Thank goodness my parents are in town.

Today I feel almost normal and I was able to turn on my computer and try to catch up.  I have a few goodies I want to post later this week, so please keep an eye on my blog.

Wow, it feels so nice to be able to drink and eat once again. Simple pleasures.

Lori Peterson Handmade Halloween Paper Set!

>> Friday, October 7, 2011

You can imagine how thrilled I was a few days ago when I received a file with a set of 9 handmade digital paper from Lori Peterson, just in time for Halloween! If you are new to my blog, Lori is always sending me amazing digital goodies to share on my blog, but this time she outdid herself.  Please go visit her Facebook page and thank her for her hard work.

I asked her how she found these papers, and she wrote "My daughter wanted a craft to do and she has been getting into art journaling. I told her "Well, we could bake some paper..." and she loved the idea. We spent the morning baking paper and having girl crafty-bonding time!"

The best part of these textures/digital papers are the names Lori's daughter gave them: Crucify, evil clown, grave soil, marrow, plaque, redrum, scorched, the haunting, and torture.  These textures/papers are not only for Halloween, they can be used all year round when you want a distressed/burned effect.

Download the free Lori Peterson Digital Halloween Papers!  If that link does not work, you can download them on Mediafire.

Chasing Dreams Texture Tutorial!

>> Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Colleen of Chasing Dreams is a dear blogging friend of mine and I can't tell you how thrilled I was when she sent this amazing texture tutorial my way to share with you.  She also sent a special coupon code for my readers.  Just pick your texture set(s) of choice from her blog and enter the coupon code COFFEE25 at checkout for 25% of your entire order!!!   I really love the new Mishmosh set.  Colleen's textures are really beautiful, so please go check them out.  This special offer expires on 10/22/2011.

Colleen has a really clever trick she uses to paint out texture on parts of the image that I have never come across before.  I love when I learn new things!

So, now on to Colleen's tutorial.

----------------------------

I am Colleen, wife, and stay at home mom for almost 29 years to six children. I started photography a few years ago hoping to take better pictures of my children when I realized that I truly loved being behind the camera. The more photography workshops that I took the more I hungered for more. About 1 1/2 years ago I discovered my love affair with photoshop. After playing around with brushes and colors I realized how fun and therapeutic it was to create textures. I just released my 10th set of textures and feel truly blessed and humbled by the success of my little business. The best part of starting up Chasing Dreams Photography has been the wonderful friendships that I have made over time.

In this tutorial I will be using textures from my new Chasing Dreams collection "Mishmosh". There are many different methods to apply textures. I use several myself. In this picture I will take you through steps that I used to process an image taken on Amalfi Coast. I wanted to not only use the actual texture but erase the unwanted areas of texture while stealing some of it's color.

CoffeeShop Circles Digital Paper Set!

>> Sunday, October 2, 2011

I can't believe it is already Sunday!  Unfortunately I caught the crud-virus from my kids, but thank goodness my dear husband is off today and is keeping them entertained.  Well, at least until Duke threw up all over the laundry room floor.  See, we have this deal:  He takes care of bloody wounds like cuts/stitches/splinters/etc. and I clean up vomit.  We have worked out a system, but today I have to confess I felt that I got the bad end of the deal since Duke threw up a few times more...  Poor kid, and poor me!

Luckily I had put together this textured digital paper set for post today. I have several colored jpgs papers (12 in by 12 in) and I also included a .psd layered version that allows you to change the color and density of the circle design in PSE or Photoshop.  So you can make unlimited paper for your scrapbooking, web design, cards, frames, etc.

I hope you enjoy using these!  And like all of the design elements I post on this blog, you can use them personally or commercially without worrying about mentioning where you got them.   :-)
