{Friday Photo Bliss} Galveston Island

We rarely take long vacations far from home. They are expensive and it is difficult (and expensive) for Paul to find fill-in doctors for his eye clinic. So we are pros at planning little last-minute weekend holidays. I would rather take many mini-vacatations than one big vacation during the year.

Last weekend we decided to spend Saturday-Monday at Galveston Island. Thankfully it wasn't affected too badly by Hurricane Harvey.

There are so many amazing things to do in Galveston, especially for the history and nature buffs.

We went to the Undersea Warfare Center at Seawolf Park and explored a destroyer and submarine.

There are my sweeties on the destroyer.

For some reason I am always drawn to bathrooms on these old WW2 military ships.

The submarine is fully outfitted and has air-conditioning. You have to watch your head and knees, all of the doors inside are knee-knockers.

I asked one of the volunteers that worked there how the toilet flushed when they were underwater. He said he was new but would get back to me with that information.

He never did.

You get great views of tanker and container ships going to the Port of Houston. What a perfect day.

We also visited the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum. It sounds like it would be boring but I was surprised and had a great time and learned so much on our visit.

They put the kids to work. 

Everyone always tells me they grow up too quickly...

Here are some of the drilling rigs waiting to be put to use.  They are oddly beautiful.

You also get a great view of the fishing and shrimp boats coming in. I couldn't stop singing this song and drove my family crazy!

We went to Katie's Seafood Market  right next to the boats and picked up some fresh-caught red snapper, flounder, and shrimp. They filleted the fish for us and we had a seafood feast for four for $35!

After all of that food we relaxed with a good book. 

And once refreshed hit the mini-golf course. Imp got 2 holes-in-one!

But my favorite part about going to the beach is GOING TO THE BEACH.

The weather was perfect, warm and sunny.

 The kids couldn't wait to hit the water.

And dig in the sand.

I was sitting in the shallow water instead of swimming since I saw a few jellyfish floating about.

The boys covered themselves in sand... 

Do girls do this?

They also hit the surf with their mini-surf boards.

We watched this young man catch the biggest fish I have ever seen caught at any beach. I asked if I could take his photo and he posed like a professional model.

We saw lots of crabs on the beach. They made me hungry.

When we were out there enjoying nature at its finest we could see the Pleasure Pier in the distance. I couldn't help but think I would rather be on the beach than on man-made rides. 

Sure, there are some jellyfish (and sharks even thought I didn't see them) in the water. So who needs roller-coasters to thrill you when you have nature trying to sting/bite/eat you up? ;-)

And we watched beautiful sunsets.

I love Galveston.
