Mama's got a Squeezebox!

When I was younger I embraced technology. I had one of the first common home computers, a Commodore Vic 20 with tape backup, a Christmas gift from my father's business partner. I knew how to program in Basic and I can't tell you how many Mad Libs "programs" I wrote on that little computer. My parents then upgraded us to a IBM PCjr (this was surprising because we didn't have much money and normally received books and board games for presents) and I continued programming, but I started creating simple digital clocks and games.
Unfortunately my father would not pay for a dot matrix printer,
so I had to use our ancient typewriter to type my school papers (I will never forget the smell of liquid paper, and how little dried pieces of it would get everywhere)... Luckily we even had a few computer games (much better than Pong). But back then computers were pretty limited and boring, so I still spent most of my childhood playing outside.
My parents just knew I was a computer genius, but alas, I proved them wrong. However, I did continue my love of computers and technology through college (even though I was a Genetics major), but once I got married and we bought our first house I just didn't have time to play as I once did. I even told my husband back in the early 90's that the internet was stupid and would go nowhere... And once our two little boys joined our family I was lucky to figure out how to work the toaster oven.
Now I feel like an old fogy because I haven't kept up with technology. I don't text (I did it once and found it tedious), I don't own an IPod or MP3 player, I don't play any video games, I could care less about a fancy computer or a surround-sound stereo system, I think Lady Gaga reeks of desperation, and I sit around talking about the good ol' days. ;-)
But times are a-changing. I actually found something modern I think I can't live without (well, I could, but I would miss it), my Logitech Squeezebox Radio
Now the boys and I can listen to any type of music at any time. We usually stick to Pandora (free and amazing), but I can also listen to all of my local stations and even stations all over the world for free with this little Wireless internet radio. It is small and I can carry it to any room or even outside, and it actually has great sound. I don't even have to have my computer on to use the Squeezebox, but I can connect to it to play MP3's, or use the free cable that comes with the radio to directly connect a MP3 player (if I had one).
I honestly don't like to stick something in my ear to listen to the radio (I grew up in the boombox generation - "Love me, Love my music"). I feel that people are becoming more and more isolated in this computer age. So we now have a family radio we can enjoy together.
Why would you want to spend the money on a Squeezebox when you can use your laptop to play music? I honestly prefer using a radio with dials and buttons (again, I am an old fogy). And this little radio has a color screen that shows the music and album or station that is being played, and it has much better speakers and sound than any laptop. It doesn't get hot or make any annoying noise like a laptop. Not to mention it looks much cuter on a shelf and is easier to use outside on your patio.
It is easier and faster to find music you love on this than on a computer. And you even have preset buttons (can you tell I like buttons?). Most importantly, it doesn't stress me out like a laptop would. Computer = work, Radio = relaxation. And would you rather your 4 year old play with a radio or your laptop?
Back to my photo at the top of this post. Anyone have an action to automatically remove dust? Not the kind on your camera lens, but the kind that gets all over your shelves in your house...
I hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!!!

I love technology too - and want this... and sent it to my husband to be amazed and impressed with me. But he asks - what does this do that the laptop doesn't do?
And I want a good answer, but I can't find one. Though it may fit more easily on the night table?
Darn. And I was about to choose it as a birthday gift! But tell us more, if you can!!
Hands down I prefer using this over any laptop. I added some of my thoughts about that in my post. I guess the main thing is it sounds a million times better than any laptop I have heard, and it is small, cute and has dials. It is so easy to find music stations. I would rather have this sitting on my bookshelf than a laptop any day!
